IN THE PINK Lent 2 2016

Issue 332
Stations of the Cross
The traditional Lent devotional service will be held this Tuesday at 7 pm at St Mary Mags (and on subsequent occasions). It lasts about three quarters of an hour, and is an occasion for meditating on the events of the Passion of Jesus. We walk around the church remembering Christ’s journey to Calvary, thinking about the events depicted in the traditional “stations”.

Keeping a Good Lent
The Sunday sermons (with the exception of Mothering Sunday) will be on the traditional ingredients of a good Lent.

 Diocesan Lent Appeal
You should have had a leaflet introducing the Diocesan Lent Appeal (if not please pick one up in church) which is to aid persecuted Christians in Iraq and Syria. There is a plate or basket at the back of church for your donations.

Women’s World Day of Prayer Preparation
Any women in the congregation who would like to help to prepare the local service are invited to Emmanuel, Harrow Road on Saturday 27th from 10:30 to 12 noon. This year’s service has been planned by women in Cuba. The actual service will be on 4th March, all around the world.

Lent Study Group at St James
The parish church of Paddington, St James, Sussex Gardens are having a Lent study group om Wednesdays at 7:15 pm, following mass at 6:30. They will be reading Rowan William’s “Being Christian” and this week’s session is on the Bible.

Electoral Rolls
If you are a regular worshipper, you should be on our electoral roll (it’s basically a membership list) but it qualifies you to vote to elect churchwardens and the PCC, so it’s called an electoral roll). We have to revise the roll every year prior to the Annual Meeting in the Spring, so the time for revision is coming up. Do check the roll at the back of the church, and if you aren’t on it, or if your address is wrong, please fill in a form and give it back to Fr. Henry as soon as possible.

Book Club
For the March meeting of the Book Club, on Wednesday 23rd March, the book to read is “A man called Ove” by Frederick Backman.

Easter Flowers
If you would like to make a donation towards Easter Flowers at either church, please see Fr. Henry.

Music Society
Do take a copy of the Music Society’s programme for the year. There are free tickets for the first event, on Thursday at 7 pm at Sussex House School.

IN THE PINK Lent 1 2016

Issue 331
Keeping a Good Lent
The Sunday sermons (with the exception of Mothering Sunday) will be on the traditional ingredients of a good Lent.

Psalm 51
On Ash Wednesday Fr. Reji urged us to learn Psalm 51 during Lent. Here it is in the NRSV translation:

Have mercy on me, O God,
According to your loving-kindness;
In your great compassion blot out my offences
Wash me through and through from my wickedness
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you only have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight.
And so you are justified when you speak
and upright in your judgment.
Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,
a sinner from my mother’s womb.
For behold, you look for truth deep within me,
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
Purge me from my sin and I shall be pure;
Wash me and I shall be clean indeed.
Make me hear of joy and gladness,
that the body you have broken may rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence
And take not your holy Spirit from me.
Give me the joy of your saving help again
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
I shall teach your ways to the wicked,
and sinners shall return to you.
Deliver me from death, O God
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.
Open my lips O Lord,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice,
but you take no delight in burnt offerings.
The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise.

IN THE PINK Sunday before Lent 2016

Issue 330
Ash Wednesday
The service for the beginning of Lent, the sung Eucharist with the traditional imposition of ashes, will be at St. Mary Mag’s at 7pm, on Wednesday 10th February. Please note the time!

St Pauls Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral Choir will be singing for us at a Deanery Evensong, for the parishes of Paddington Deanery, at 3.15pm today at St Matthew’s Bayswater. This is a rare privilege, to experience this magnificent choir helping to lead worship here in Paddington. Just come along and enjoy it, St Matthew’s is on St Petersburgh Place, which runs parallel to Queensway (just to the West), just a block back from Bayswater Road.

Diocesan Lent Appeal
You should have had a leaflet introducing the Diocesan Lent Appeal (if not please pick one up in church) which is to aid persecuted Christians in Iraq and Syria. We shall be having collections for the appeal through Lent, and the leaflet offers other ways to give.

Confessions
If you want to make a confession before Lent, please speak to Fr. Henry.

Cathedral Learning
The new season’s brochure for adult learning events at St. Pauls Cathedral is now available at the back of the church. The first Sunday lunchtime Forum is today from 1 to 2pm where the speaker is Padraig O’Tuama, the leader of the Corrymeela Community.

Hymns
A reminder that we can often find the chance to sing a favourite hymn if you ask James or Fr. Henry.

Singers
If you sing, and would be interested in helping to lead our singing, by being a cantor at St Mary Mags, please speak to James.

Book Club
For the March meeting of the Book Club, on Wednesday 23rd March, the book to read is “A Man called Ove” by Frederick Backman.
