IN THE PINK Late August 2017

        Issue 404
Carnival
Do remember that Carnival happens on 27th & 28th August, and that this makes it very difficult to drive to church from the south on Sunday 27th. Do check your route. Also be aware of parking restrictions. The residents’ bays outside SMM which are normally free at the weekend are residents only on 27th. Around St Peter’s there are restrictions on Chippenham Road, where all the bays are residents only, and on side roads.

Help Fix St Peter’s Roof!
We are having urgent work done on the roof at St Peter’s, fixing splits in the asphalt and repointing the lead flashings round the gutters, because water has been coming in when it has rained hard. This will cost us £3,000. Please can you help us to raise this sun? Thanks for your donations so far, which have taken us to over £1,000. Donations to Fr Henry or to Richard Benet.

During the Building Works
The conservation and building works at St Mary Mags will take about a year, and the church will become a building site, surrounded by a hoarding. The nave will be full of scaffolding so that the conservators and volunteers are able to get up to the ceiling to clean it. It will not be possible for us to do weddings or funerals in the church, but SUNDAY WORSHIP WILL CONTINUE IN THE OUTER VESTRY. That is underneath the chancel, in one of the rooms you get to by going through the gate in the wall at the east end and down the outside steps. We shall have our own entry through the hoarding, enabling us to go down the steps to the Vestry. It will be a squash, but it is important for us to continue worshipping on the site. The Sunday Mass will be 9:30 as usual, and we will try not to have any combined services at Mary Mags. Watch this space for details of special occasions.

September Special
The Women’s Social Group at St Peter’s are planning a celebration for their 3rd birthday on Sunday 24th September, after church. There will be a concert and refreshments, and a very special raffle. Raffle tickets are on sale now. The group will need your help with raffle prizes, so please bring prizes as soon as possible, and give them to Josephine.

Road Works
Elgin Avenue is to be resurfaced between St Peter’s and the Prince of Wales, starting on 29th August. This will close the road completely for 10 weeks, so don’t attempt to drive that way, and you won’t be able to park there either.

September Book Club
The Book Club will meet at 7:30pm on Wednesday 27th September at St Peter’s.
The book to read is “Perfume” by Patrick Suskind. The usual posters will be going up in church.

Weekday Services
We shall be resuming Evening Prayer on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30 pm in the Vestry at St Mary Mags from 15th August. We shall resume the Wednesday Mass in September, but this will need to be in the evening, probably at 6pm or 6:30pm, but we will need feedback as to whether that will suit people. Speak to Fr Henry.
